Question from Carl Richards of Chicago, Illinois:

Q. My toilet does not flush correctly.  When I flush it, the water just swirls inside the bowl and I have to hold the lever down so the bowl will empty.  Then it keeps running on the refill cycle.  What's wrong?

A.  I believe you have a bad flapper valve.  What I would do is replace all internal components of the toilet.  This should solve your problem.

Question from Diane Gardner in Shreveport, Louisiana:

Q.  My garbage disposer stopped working.  It makes a humming noise when I cut it on.  Should I replace it?

A. Don't replace it.Your disposer is probably jammed.  I would use a hex key in the slot on the bottom to manually 'turn' the disposer and this should work.

Question from Kenneth Abrams of Toledo, Ohio:

Q.  In my kitchen, I have a microwave and a dishwasher.  When I run my dishwasher, I might decide to run the microwave at the same time.  When I do this, they trip a breaker.  Why does this happen?

A.  This sounds like they are on the same circuit.  Either plug the microwave into a different circuit, or better yet add a new circuit dedicated to the dishwasher.

Question from Jennifer Lewis in Atlanta, Georgia:

Q.  My roof leaks near the chimney. The roofer has tries to repair twice to no avail. What could be causing this?

A.  It could be several variables to solve this one.  The obvious reason to me is that flashing was not applied or applied wrong. The next reason might be you have a high pitched roof and if this is the case,  the roofer needs to build a cricket where the chimney and roof meet to deflect water on both sides of the cricket in addition to flashing it.
