Choices In Bathroom Accessories
Installing bathroom accessories provides you functionality in the space. The biggest hurdle to overcome is picking the finishes or matching the existing finish when shopping at your local home store.
Where do you start? If you are beginning from scratch with no bath accessories in the bathroom, at most home stores you can find a whole bathroom accessory kit that includes towel racks, tissue holders, and grab bars for your tub. These kits come with all the screws you need to install them.
The main thing to remember when installing your accessories is to locate the stud for grab bars and other weight bearing accessible bars. You will also need a level, cordless drill, and drill-bit for pre-drilling holes for your bath bars. The manufacturer will list the sizes needed in the instructions.
Bathroom storage solutions. When looking at your bathroom layout, you must get pretty creative in finding storage. Are you wasting the under-sink in your bathroom and kitchen? Make use of it by buying a roll-out platform to fit the cabinet. The shelves should be just wide enough to fit on the platform and low enough to clear the plumbing. Screw the shelves to the platform.
The platform will slide on one of two types of standard drawer hardware -- a partial-extension slide or a full-extension slide. A partial extension slide will stop the platform with about 4 inches inside the cabinet. They cost less than full-extension slides, are easier to install, and are sufficient for light loads of towels and paper products.
Accommodating specific needs. For those who have physical disabilities or who intend to stay in their home as they age, foresight can make life more comfortable, convenient, and safe. The best time to make changes is during a remodeling project. For people in wheelchairs, make doorways 2 inches wider than standard.
Place electrical receptacles in the faces of cabinets below counters. Equip doors with levered knobs, drawers with easily grasped handles, and slide-out cutting boards with one touch latches.
For people with limited vision, install lighting that reduces glare and color distortion. Areas where levels change, such as steps or landings, should be highlighted with borders of contrasting color or texture to prevent falls. Edges of countertops should also be highlighted. For those who have difficulty moving about, an intercom system is a major convenience.
