Measure the installation area and head over to the homestore to get your materials.  If you don't have access to a power saw, have it cut for you while at the store.  Buy a handrail bracket for every 4 feet of handrail length.
Handrails are attached to the studs at a height of 32 inches to 34 inches.  Decide which height you will use, then measure up and draw a horizontal line at the top and of the stair tread. Connect that line from the top of the staircase to the bottom of the staircase.  Drill 7/64" pilot holes for your handrail brackets.  Add a handrail bracket for every 4 feet of length.
Continue installing all brackets.  Next, take the correctly cut length of handrail and lay on top of the brackets.  Position the straps the way you feel comfortable with, then use the 2 holes in the straps as your template.  Drill 3/32" pilot hole for the underside of the handrail, firmly securing the 2 screws underneath.
A handrail provides safety and is a pleasing addition to any staircase.  The average person can install them in less than an hour.  They come in a variety of woods and you may wish to stain them to match other wood trim around the staircase.  The main thing to remember is find the studs and attach them correctly.

Be sure to get a small bucket of wall patch for those mistakes that will inadvertently occur when trying to find all your wall studs.  Finish patching any holes that were mistakes and good luck!
