What Does It Cost?

During a fire, smoke spreads fast and smoke alarms may give you time to get out safely. Follow these tips to assure that your smoke alarms work properly:
Install smoke alarms on every level
of your home, inside each bedroom and
outside each sleeping area.
Hard-wired smoke alarms operate on
your household electrical current and
can be inter-connected so that every
alarm sounds regardless of the fire's
location.
If someone in your home is deaf or
hard of hearing, install an alarm that
uses strobe lights. Vibration equipment
can be added to these alarms.
Mount smoke alarms high on walls or ceilings (smoke rises), at least four inches away from the nearest wall. Wall-mounted alarms should be installed 4 to 12 inches away from the ceiling.
Don't install smoke alarms near windows, doors, or ducts where drafts might interfere with their operation. Never paint or decorate smoke alarms.
Test alarms at least monthly. Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old or sooner if they do not respond properly when tested.
